art basel miami

Given that my first blog was on the anticipated mega art fair it seems responsible to add a comment at this point. It is Saturday night here in Miami and the fair itself ends tomorrow. It has been five official days of art fest and i kid you not it is exhausting, my only wish is that it were extended for at least another week. I am lucky as I can go and see the shows at the Margulis or Rubell collection or any of the other private shows in the coming months at my leisure,,,,but for others who are visiting this city,,,,,they must be sleeping on their journeys home. The main event was as usual exiting,,,overcrowded but generous in its display of great works new and old, my only regret was that I did not get back to really look at it. I fairly died over a gorgeous Helen Frankentheler piece, huge as it was and timeless. some beautiful Milton Averys and of course the big guys, a Picasso here and there,,,some wonderful sculpture also. I really don't do the show justice as my time was short and it is massive....next year I will carve more time. I went to the opening of the new Gallery Bertin in the Wynwood district, well done Serge Ernandez for managing the transformation of the space, no easy task here in Miami, it is truly magnificent, lets hope the art brings it to life in the coming months. The Sagamore hotel had a delightful brunch and it wasn't just the free foot massages that were hot, the art integrated into the common spaces was nicely curated and a pleasure to see. I stopped by really quickly at the red dot show up a block from the Sagamore, they took over from the Townhouse I guess, and that was fun,,,,much to see, with numerous galleries displaying there wares. I am sure the satellite fairs were equally ambitious and I hope that both artists and vendors made great business. I will update occasionally on the art scene here in Miami.

yoga sutra in depth

I am two weeks out of the workshop on the Yoga Sutras given by my teacher Yoga Rupa Rod Stryker and trying to assimilate the vast amount of information received. When i did my yoga teacher training we covered briefly this important text on yoga, it didn't really make allot of sense back then. for the recent course we had the Behar books translation as required reading, like a good student i plodded through it, it still didn't make allot of sense. I had to trust that it would begin to unfold. I was not disappointed at Yoga Rupas methodical unravelling and delivery, his practical applications and his passion for the teachings as we all moved forward to some level of understanding. How do i now bring this into my life, my teaching?. There was an immense sense of vitality during those five days, as we moved from lecture to asana to meditation and it is this vitality that can be kept alive and transmitted in everyday life on and off the mat. So it is that i commit to nurturing the flame within and imparting this gift to my students.

yoga rupa rod stryker comes to miami

lest i forget or begin to take myself and the art world too seriously i wanted to mention that my teacher and great sage will be in town this weekend. my yoga teacher Rod Stryker will be at Prana Yoga Miami from Friday 26th of October until the 30th. we are indeed blessed to be able to experience his teachings. this seminar will be on the subject of the Sutras, the heart and core of yogic philosophy. one does not need to be a teacher to participate, information can be found at parayoga.com. he will also be participating in the omega conference, which will be held in Ft. Lauderdale the following week.

art basel miami

Miami is gearing up for its annual art fest, as we the locals look forward to the four day art tsunami held every year in the first few days of December. no ordinary feast for the eyes is this, an orgiastic affair befitting of this city. and what will await us this season, who will be the current hot young or old and older mega stars. ahha, that will require being here. i have to admit that i am a little cynical[i am an artist after all] but i will be d....d if i don't find it to be pretty exhilarating. the main space is the convention centre, two years ago i found a booth dedicated to the works of Giorgio Morandi, the Italian still life artist,,,,where would i have to go to see that,,,,next stop Florence, or a good selection of paintings by Milton Avery, not to mention the sheer amount of masters represented is staggering. i kvell at the odd Alice Neel, so rarely seen, the abundance of De Koonings, perhaps a Joan Mitchell here and there and then there is the new superstars, spot them if you can,,,try to buy them and they are sold,,,,before the show opened to the masses. the side venues tart up the city wonderfully, one can run from place to place,,,party to party. in a way that's what it feels like,,,,one long four day party, breakfast to dinner to late night,,,,,energy required. the local museums also do a fine job curating some great shows from their vaults, and no i don't work for the city or the infamous fair,,,,just live here in Miami,,,,so if you have thought of taking it in, you will not be disappointed,,,,well you may not get the work of art you covet,,,,but there is something for everyone,,,and you might have fun and satisfy the eye.
